Algerian boxer Imane Khelif wins first match at Olympics, opponent quits

Carini of Italy retires after just 46 seconds

Khelif, Lin Yu-ting at center of gender eligibility controversy

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif won her opening match of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Tuesday, August 1, when her opponent Angela Carini of Italy quit after just 46 seconds.

Khelif, a two-time world champion, was at the center of a controversy over gender eligibility last year after failing a gender verification test at the world championships. She was stripped of a bronze medal following the test.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since said that neither Khelif nor Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting, who was also involved in the controversy, are ineligible to compete in the Olympics.

Khelif's win on Tuesday was her first at the Olympics. She is not making her Olympic debut, having competed in the 2020 Tokyo Games. Lin Yu-ting is also a two-time world champion and is competing in her first Olympics.
