France Hold Off Portugal in Tense Quarterfinal Clash
France advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA European Championship on Friday after defeating Portugal 5-3 in a penalty shootout. The match ended 0-0 after extra time, with neither team able to find a winning goal in regulation.
Portugal had the better chances in the first half, with Cristiano Ronaldo forcing a save from Hugo Lloris with a free kick and Joao Felix hitting the post from close range. France grew into the game in the second half, and Kylian Mbappe had a great chance to win it in the dying minutes, but his shot was saved by Rui Patricio.
The game went to penalties, and France held their nerve to win 5-3. Aurelien Tchouameni scored the winning penalty, sending Portugal crashing out of the tournament.
France will now face Spain in the semifinals on Tuesday.
